UNN to use suicide note to investigate death of student

The management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, has begun investigation into the death of a final year student of Agric Economics, Tobechukwu Okeke who recently committed suicide.

The sad news that the final year student allegedly hung himself to death, stirred up controversy on the social media on Monday after his dangling image from a ceiling went viral in the social media.

He allegedly took his own life over unpaid debt, in his residence in Odigwe – a few metres away from the school.

The Punch reports that a suicide note was recovered from his apartment and handed over to the Chief Security Officer of the institution and the school authorities are currently using the content of the note to unravel what actually led to his death.

The Dean of Students Affairs, UNN, Prof. Uju Umo, commenting on the incident, said, “He committed suicide and left a suicide note. Contact the university’s CSO.”

The CSO could not be reached as at press time.

Some friends of the deceased commented on the incident on the social media, saying he had invested some money he borrowed in a failed gambling and had hard times repaying his creditors.

A Twitter user, am_dannyb, who shared the photos, wrote: “This Is My Friend In Department Of Agric Economics That Helps Me Repair My Faulty Electrical Appliance For Free.

“He’s Good In Fixing Electrical Appliances & Wiring Despite Studying Agric. He Shared His Dream Of Going Into Building Wiring And Other Electricity Related Stuff As A Career.

“How Could My Own Nigga Do This To Himself ?? Am Weeping Literally.”

But some other users have clearly stated that suicide was not the solution to problems.

One @themonk, who seemed to be in the know of the incident, wrote: “Yes o, he was owing people, he lost their money to betting.”

@Rhymzz wrote: “How much exactly would warrant this? Betting ke? Why not someone introduced him to MMM? Not some shortcomings, hard days, or even death of loved ones can make me commit suicide.”

@ Nixiepie: “This is sad, suicide is never the solution. Is this world not sickening enough?”

@lexy-youth: “It saddens one heart seeing this type of scenario where people commit suicide but seriously, this is not the solution, facing challenges make one a real man. May God have mercy on us.”

@mormor: “The only thing that can make me commit suicide is my health condition. Any day I see myself as deformed, in the sense that I don’t contribute to the society or enjoy any pleasure; then am as good as dead.”
