The Inauspicious - S01 E16

Amanda’s white knee-length fitted gown was already bloody before they could get Ray and Laura to the hospital. While Ray had taken a bullet to save her, Laura had shot herself. Amanda had gone wild and crazy seeing Ray in the pool of his own blood and Laura’s almost lifeless body.

She paced the length and breadth of the hospital’s waiting room as she watched nurses go in and out of the theatre where Ray and Laura were been operated upon. Her tears flowed without hinderance soaking her already bloody dress. Her lips moved inaudibly as she prayed for her friend and the love of her life. Her mother and Raymond’s mother soon joined the pacing event with each of their lips uttering words of prayer. Those seated watched all three women pace and wished they could comfort them in any way but they couldn’t. They needed comfort themselves.

Mrs Andison (Laura’s mom walked briskly into the hospital.

Mrs Andison: where is my daughter (she asked no one in particular)

All eyes turned to her. Amanda’s eyes were bloodshot with traces of dried tears on her face. With six heavy steps, she stood in front of her and did what she had never done and hoped she wouldn’t do. She slapped her.

Everyone gasped in shock while Mrs Andison was dazzled as the slap made her move two steps backward.

Mrs Daniel: (standing in-between) what was the meaning of that, have you lost your mind?

Amanda: i have mom, i have lost my mind because in there are two people who matters the most in my life fighting for their lives and why? Because of that woman (she said pointing a finger at Laura’s mom. Everyone was confused and gave her a questioning look. She took two steps closer to her again)

if you hadn’t loved your job more than your daughter, then Laura wouldn’t have felt so lonely and if you hadn’t blamed her so much for the death of uncle Andison, then maybe she wouldn’t have lived with so much guilt and if you hadn’t abadoned her when she needed you the most, when life dealt her a blow, when her her already dark world turned pitch darker and her world came crashing when she was raped, then maybe, just maybe she wouldn’t have become what she is today. She wouldn’t have had any reason to hate men and all the jealousy and hatred she had all bottled up in her would not have even be there in the first place. Just pray to God that is if you serve any because i doubt you do. But if you have any, you better start praying because if anything happens to any of them, then i promise you, you won’t only receive a slap from me but i’ll make sure you pay.

(mrs Andison had her hands to her tears covered face as she remembered how badly she had treated her own daughter. Amanda turned without another word and resumed her pacing with both hands on her head. )

Jovita watched silently the events before her as she rested calmly in the hands of her aunt Benita (Raymond’s sister). Her small mind couldn’t comprehend a thing that was happening. Except for the gunshot which had awakened her, every other thing was too much for her feeble mind to take in all at once. From her mother’s wailing to her running back and forth to help keep awake her father and aunt and then to the intervention of black men on black uniforms, her 2-years old mind couldn’t take any of it.

She looked from her pacing mothers to the women on white dresses and soon drifted into sleep.

everyone rushed towards the doctor as he stepped out with the nurses which wore gloomy faces after an hour of unending turmoil and their heartbeat increased. Dr Matthew glanced at each face as he sort a better way to break the news to them. He spoke after a minute of palpable silence.

Dr. Matthew: erm….. (sighs) i’m sorry we did all we could but…

Amanda: (almost yelling) but what?

(she asked even though her head was screaming the answerg she had watched scenes like this in movies and she knew the next word wouldn’t be so good for her already torn heart but she wished it would be different. That he would just smile and ease the tension in her. That he would just tell them everything was alright or they were in control of the situation. And that in a few days they would be able to celebrate Jovita’s birthday with Laura and Ray present. And then they could do a thanksgiving service but what she heard next told her, her wishes would never come to pass, not in a thousand years.)

Dr. Matthew: i’m sorry but we lost them both
